Dripping faucets are a common problem. While the constant trickling noises can be annoying, they can surprisingly be very costly and rack up your water bill. In addition to this, dripping faucets encourages rust and mold growth. Below are some tips you can keep in mind to prevent this annoying issue.

What Causes a Dripping Faucet?

A dripping faucet can be caused by a variety of things. One of the most common is mineral build-up. Over time, calcium and magnesium can start to collect around the edges of your faucet. This can wear down the faucet’s washers and cause other parts to corrode.

Another reason a faucet might drip is because there’s a worn washer. This washer typically rests in the faucet’s valve seat. The constant motion of turning the sink on or off can create friction. This can wear down the washer and cause water to escape.

Some other causes of dripping faucets include a loose o-ring, broken faucet cartridge, or incorrect washer installation.

3 Ways to Stop Dripping Faucets

  • Replace the Washers: A washer is a crucial component of a faucet because it stops the water flow when you turn the device off. If the washer is damaged or not installed correctly, it could lead to drips. How to replace the washer will depend on the type of faucet you have. Most faucet washers can be replaced by simply twisting the handles and spout off. Below them you’ll find the washers. Remove these and then replace them with new ones before putting the handles and spout back in place.
  • Check the O-Ring: O-rings prevent water from squirting out of the faucet when you turn it on. If it’s worn or not secured correctly, it could lead to water oozing out of the faucet. The o-ring is situated beneath the spout where it connects to the deck plate. If you notice water leaking out of this area, the o-ring needs to be replaced.
  • Change the Faucet Cartridge: If you have a cartridge faucet, you might need to replace the cartridge to stop the dripping. While most cartridges will last for up to 30 years, sometimes overuse can quickly wear them down. This could cause water to drip out of the faucet.

To change the cartridge you’ll first need to turn the water supply off. After doing so, unscrew the spout and remove the o-ring from the bottom. You’ll then find the cartridge. Use pliers to grip and twist the cartridge off. After doing so, slide the new cartridge on and then cover it with the o-ring and spout.
